A Short Note Of HDMI To DVI Cable
HDTV is a very popular form of video viewing today. There are many screens available that support this technology. However, the HDTV is yet to monopolise the market. There are still many screens that run on an older technology like DVI or Digital Video Interface. As a result of co-existence of these two technologies, there are times when we need to interconnect these too. A HDMI to DVI cable is ideal for such needs.
Before we look at how does this cable help us, let us first look at the technologies themselves. They have some similarity that really makes them work so well together and we can use this cable for the same.
The DVI was one of the first digital video standards to be developed. The difference between digital video signal and analog signal is the manner in which information is transmitted. The traditional VGA used analog video signals to bend electron rays and display picture. The modern DVI system uses digital bits to illuminate pixels on the LCD screen and display pictures.
The main aspect of the DVI technology was, as the name suggests, it was a purely video interface. So you could only transmit digital video signals over this interface. You needed a separate audio interface for the audio portion.
HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface was a big improvement over DVI. To start with it improved the quality of picture being displayed by increasing the pixel count per frame. This meant that you would get high definition picture on the screen.Secondly, it was no more a video interface but a multimedia interface. This meant that the signal was a composite audio video signal. This allowed a lot of flexibility in the kind of sources that could use this cable to transmit information.
With the multimedia support, HDMI lent itself well to HDTV receivers, DVDs playing HD pictures and even gaming consoles. Now when we look back that the HDTV to DVI cable you can easily see why a single cable is sufficient to transmit the video signals. The only point though is that with this cable you can one send video signals. As DVI does not support audio, one end of this cable cannot send or receive audio signals.
You would have to use this cable along with a separate audio connection. But when you consider that you can now use your existing DVI source of video with a HDTV without any fuss, adding an audio connection seems nothing.
