Comparison of Programming Features for Dish Network and DirecTV

A basic package is the required core element of your satellite TV programming. While both Dish Network and DIRECTV offer most of the same channels, there are some differences in how they are organized across packages.

Can I pick the channels I want, or make up my own package?

This option is not offered by the satellite companies. You have to choose from the packages offered. We've made this task easier by allowing you to compare the programs included in each package at a glance in the feature comparison below.

What HDTV programming is available?

HDTV programming is still quite limited. There is an HD version of HBO and Showtime that you will get if you have HD equipment and subscribe to those services (i.e., if you subscribe to HBO you will get HBO HD). There is also a channel called HDNet, offered by DIRECTV that offers a variety of HD programming. The Discovery Channel offers something called “Discovery HD Theater”, available on Dish Network. Some local channels, notably CBS in NY and LA, are also available on Dish Network.
