Is Satellite Internet Available for Apartment Dwellers?
As a resident of an apartment, condo, townhome, or other type of residence that is governed by a covenant, homeowners association, or property management company, you may or may not be able to buy satellite Internet. The rules governing your satellite use and the direction in which your property faces could restrict your satellite high speed Internet access. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has adopted rules to protect apartment dwellers who want to install an antenna.
“Restrictions that impair the installation, maintenance, or use of antennas used to receive video programming”* are prohibited according to the FCC. This rule also states that it encompasses 2-way satellite Internet dishes.

What Does Exclusive Use Mean?
According to the FCC, exclusive use refers to the part of your property that is not shared, for example your patio, and it is permissible to buy and install satellite Internet in this area. Since this area is exclusively yours to use, you are allowed to install an Internet satellite antenna there.
Plain and simple, your association or management company cannot interfere with exclusive use; even if they can restrict use of barbecue grills and flags. According to the FCC, it just plain doesn’t matter. Your patio is defined as exclusive. You can install a satellite dish on your deck or patio and take advantage of high speed satellite Internet availability.
What is Considered a Common Area?
Satellite dishes cannot be placed in common areas, such as walkways, roofs, etc. You are also not allowed to drill holes on any shared or exterior walls of your unit. These areas and walls are considered common areas. Last, the rule does not cover an installation that “extends out beyond the balcony or patio is usually considered to be in a common area…” You’ll need to make sure that you keep your high-speed Internet satellite installation only in your exclusive use areas.

South Facing Direction
All rules and FCC policies aside, if your exclusive property does not face the southern sky, then you may not have high speed satellite Internet access. The satellite dish must face south where the orbiting satellite rests 22,000 miles above the equator.
